French-Canadian Tales

Natalie Savage Carlson, of French-Canadian descent, was an American writer of children's books. Most well-known for her Family Under the Bridge, she also wrote lovely books that reached back into the folktales of New France. These are her Sashes Red and Blue and Alphonse: That Bearded One.

In a like manner, she was the authoress of the delightful Orpheline books (Happy Orpheline, Brother for the Orphelines, Grandmother for the Orphelines, among others) which are set in France and convey much of the customs and holidays of that country.

Many of her books were beautifully illustrated by Garth Williams who also breathed picture life into the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

Sadly, most of her books are out of print and are not being circulated by public libraries any more.

Tillie Pine wrote enjoyable science books for young children. Her books usually start with engaging questions that have children want to turn the pages and find out more.

She then goes on to reveal to them all the "secrets" they might have wondered about in a fine narrative -  and before they realize it, they have learned so much ... !

She also wrote science books tied to a specific history topic, such as The Egyptians Knew, The Incas Knew, The Eskimos Knew, The Arabs Knew, The Indians Knew, The Pilgrims Knew, The Chinese Knew

This blog is dedicated to a living books library of rare, out-of-print children's books, located in Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada.

We try to collect the very best books that have ever been written for children. Books full of wonderful stories, knowledge and values that have thrilled the hearts and minds of children time and again.
This makes our library very different from public libraries that only collect what is current and of the latest publications. Books are constantly being discarded from these public venues to make room for the most recent ones!
Although there are some good books even published today, many are less worthy, due to the influences prevailing in today's society.
